THE VIOLIN THAT
PLAYED AS THE TITANIC SANK
A violin played by the Titanic’s
bandleader as the ship sank after
hitting an iceberg was sold at UK-
based Devizes auction house,
Henry Aldridge & Son, for a
whopping £900,000. According
to survivors, bandleader Wallace
Hartley and his band played
to calm passengers even as the
ship was sinking into the waves
beneath them. Hartley’s body
was reportedly pulled from the
water days later with his violin
case still strapped to his back.
